/ŋ/

· ·

Voiced velar nasal. 'Ng' sound, never word-initial in English.

Example words

sing
think
bank
longer

How to make the sound

Raise the back of the tongue to the soft palate, lower the soft palate, and let voiced air pass through the nose.

What to feel and listen for

The sound is made at the back, not with the tongue tip. It can be held smoothly.

Common mistake: Do not add a final /g/ after /ŋ/ unless the word actually contains /ŋg/.
